Eddy Currents: Electromagnetic Induction

Magnets in Eddy Tubes or Lenz's Law
PIRA Class: 5K20.25

Purpose
To observe the opposing magnetic forces produced by the eddy currents set up within the walls of an aluminum tube by a magnet falling through the tube.

Description
Side-by-side, a cylindrical magnet and a cylindrical (look-alike) "dummy" magnet are dropped down two aluminum tube, respectively. The magnet is observed to fall through the tube at a much slower rate than than the dummy magnet.
EXTRA: Ask students which tube weighs more during this process. Hang aluminum tube from a spring scale and observe the tube's weight change as the magnet falls through it.

Equipment
Magnet, "Dummy" magnet, Two 1.5 m Aluminum tubes
Optional: Spring scale
