Description and Lab Hours PHYS 1271 is the companion laboratory to PHYS 1251. The laboratory covers sound production, nature of vibrations, sound intensity and frequency. The purpose of the laboratory course is to give you 'Hands
on' exposure to the concepts and principles you study in class. The lab is an "OPEN" lab, meaning you can come in at almost any time during our scheduled hours to do the lab. Requirements: It is your responsibility
to make time in your schedule to come in and do your lab work. It
is also your
responsibility to be familiar with Physics
Instructional Center (PIC) policies on check-in times, testing and
grading. PIC Hours Tuesday
11:00 AM - 3:00 PM Wednesday
11:00 AM - 8:00 PM Thursday
11:00 AM - 8:00 PM Friday
11:00 AM - 2:00 PM Note: The PIC will be closed on Good Friday, Spring Semester.

Laboratory Information 1. The Musical Acoustics Laboratory is located in room 229 in the Physics building. All experiments will be performed at this location. 2. You must buy a workbook for this class and bring it to the laboratory every time you perform an experiment. Write your name in this workbook. It is also wise to put your name on your calculator, as many students leave theirs behind. The experiments can not be completed without this workbook. The workbook is available for purchase at the University Bookstore under the listing for PHYS 1270. 3. Before performing any experiment, you must complete the pre-lab exercises for that experiment. The pre-lab exercises will normally be distributed in room 209 of the Physics Instructional Center prior to the start of the semester. They will also be posted on the internet in the pre-lab section. 4. Now you can go to the PIC (Phys Room 209) and read the big, white board to the left as you walk in. This will let you know in what room your lab is set up and if there have been any last minute changes in the schedule. 5. Check-in for the lab at the front desk in Phys room 209 by giving the clerk your student ID. 6. Go to your lab's assigned room and show the TA your pre-lab. The TA will then assign you to a table. Follow the procedure outlined in your manual. If you have any questions, just ask. Note: The earlier during the day and week you attend lab, the more personal help you can get.7. When you've finished the experiment and answered the questions at the end, have a TA check your work to be sure it was done correctly. Hint: Have a TA check your data about half-way through or at least before you do any calculations. That way, if you're doing something wrong, you won't have so much to redo.Give the TA your ID so he or she can check you out on the computer while you make sure your area is cleaned up. Don't forget to get your ID back, and do not leave until the TA has told you you have been cleared! IF you must leave before completely finishing, get the work that you have done checked by a TA. The TA must sign your lab manual noting what has been completed and what is left to do. Come back to finish and get checked-out before the end of labs Friday.8. Upon completion of each experiment, you must have your work graded by a teaching assistant before leaving the room. If you have performed all parts of the experiment correctly, you will receive 50 points for that lab. 9. The experiments will require you to bring a pencil and a calculator with the log and square root functions. 10. Each experiment will be performed during a particular week. You are free to perform an experiment any time that week during the hours the lab is open. The experiments will normally take 1-2 hours, so entry to the laboratory is restricted one hour prior to closing time on any given day. Consult the Semester Schedule for the times the laboratory is open and for the weeks during which each experiment will be performed. 11. No experiments may be started after 12:30pm on any given Friday. 12. There are two make-up weeks. The first make-up week, you will be allowed to make-up any one of the preceding labs; the second make-up week, you will be allowed to make-up any labs between the first make-up week and the second. It is highly recommended and preferred that you complete the labs the week they are scheduled. 13. The teaching assistants are there to help you perform the experiment properly. Do not hesitate to ask questions! If you perform parts of the experiment incorrectly, you may be asked to redo those parts. The teaching assistants will help you avoid such time-consuming pitfalls. 14. The pre-labs and the experiments are designed to help you master the objectives in your lecture. We hope you enjoy the laboratory experience.
