Course Description and Lab Hours

The purpose of the laboratory course is to give you 'Hands on' exposure to the concepts and principles you study in class.  An attempt has been made to correlate the labs with the corresponding topics in your lecture; please realize, however, that a perfect match is not always possible.  You might get to a topic in lab before it has been covered in class.

Requirements:  It is your responsibility to make time in your schedule to come in and complete your lab work during the hours of availability.  It is also your responsibility to be familiar with Physics Instructional Center (PIC) policies on check-in times, testing and grading.

PIC Hours
Hours subject to change. Refer to notices posted in the PIC (Phys 209) for any changes in hours.

Grading

  1. Write your name in ink in a prominent place on or in your manual.  You can't sell it back to the bookstore at the end of the semester, so go ahead and write in it. It is also wise to put your name on your calculator, as many students accidentally leave theirs behind.

  2. Labs start the 2nd week of classes in the Fall and Spring semesters; 1st week in the Summer.

  3. Before coming to lab each week, you must have done the Pre-lab questions.  The information you need to answer these questions can be found in the Introduction and Theory section of the corresponding lab.  Occasionally you may have to refer to your textbook.

  4. Now you can go to the PIC (Phys Room 209) and read the big, white board to the left as you walk in.  This will let you know in what room your lab is set up and if there have been any last minute changes in the schedule.

  5. Check-in for the lab at the front desk in Phys room 209 by giving the clerk your student ID.

  6. Go to your lab's assigned room and show the TA your pre-lab. The TA will then assign you to a table.  Follow the procedure outlined in your manual.  If you have any questions, just ask.
Note:  The earlier during the day and week you attend lab, the more personal help you can get.
  7. When you've finished the experiment and answered the questions at the end, have a TA check your work to be sure it was done correctly.
Hint: Have a TA check your data about half-way through or at least before you do any calculations.  That way, if you're doing something wrong, you won't have so much to redo.
Give the TA your ID so he or she can check you out on the computer while you make sure your area is cleaned up.  Don't forget to get your ID back, and do not leave until the TA has told you you have been cleared!
IF you must leave before completely finishing, get the work that you have done checked by a TA.  The TA must sign your lab manual noting what has been completed and what is left to do.  Come back to finish and get checked-out before the end of labs Thursday.
  8. There is a tutorial in Room 207.  You may go in at any time during PIC hours to go through it.  It is advisable to go through it at least once after doing the lab and before taking the lab test.  You may also get help with homework in this room during PIC hours.

  9. You may take the test any time after the lab but during the same week as the lab.  No credit will be given for a test without completing the lab.   To take the test, you must check-in again in Room 209.  The test is 10 multiple-choice questions, and you may only take with you your calculator and something to write with; scratch paper is provided.

  10. When you have finished your test and submitted it, you will be shown your score.  You will then have the opportunity to review your test to see what, if anything, you missed and what the correct answers were.

  11. After the test, log out of the workstation where you took your test.  You do not need to check out at the front desk.
