The Department of Physics at the University of North Texas (UNT) is offering several graduate assistantships for the 2007-2008 academic year, beginning in January.

UNT, the foremost university in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex, is a major metropolitan-research university of over 35,000 students. Research opportunities leading to MA, MS, and PhD in Physics are found in a variety of experimental and theoretical areas, for example, in the application of electrostatic accelerators to atomic physics and materials characterization; the modeling of non-linear dynamics, chaos and non-extensive statistical systems; the investigation of the surface and bulk physics of novel materials and microstructures; and the astrophysics of galaxy formation.

The department is affiliated with area industrial research laboratories, providing intern and advanced technology research opportunities. Teaching Assistant responsibilities consist primarily of supervision and oversight of undergraduates in computer-aided introductory physics and astronomy laboratories. Student contact hours are limited to approximately twelve hours per week using the facilities of the NSF-funded Physics Instructional Center, the new Digistar II one-hundred-seat planetarium and multimedia theater, a multi-telescope student observatory and a remotely controlled robotics dark sky observatory.

Graduate assistants are assigned a personal mini-office equipped with telephone and computer workstations. Assistantships command competitive stipends of approximately $1,500/per month in addition to an in-state tuition waiver. Graduate fellowships of $20,000 yr. are also available.  Interested applicants should examine the UNT departmental web site at www.phys.unt.edu where on-line graduate school and assistantship applications can be made.  For inquiries or further information e-mail physics@unt.edu, or by mail to: UNT, Department of Physics, P.O. Box 311427, Denton, TX 76203-1427. The University of North Texas is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
