Graduate and
undergraduate students in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science and
Electrical Engineering are invited to apply for the
International Research Experience in Nanoscale science and
technology. The National
Science Foundation and The University of North Texas sponsor this
program to provide U.S. graduate and undergraduate students an
opportunity to join research projects for the summer.
This program will
allow students to experience first-hand research experience in
nanotechnology in Japanese Universities, spending 7-8 weeks at the
National Institute of Material Science Tsukuba, Japan or Shimane University to work in the
areas of:
- Semiconductor nanostructures
- optoelectronics
- photonic structures
- colloidal quantum dots
- DNA based molecular electronic devices
The award will support students for 7-8 week summer research
experiences in Japan. Each year students from graduate and
undergraduate level will be selected. The Japan Society for
Promotion of Science will support additional aspects of the student
and faculty exchange program between UNT and the National Institute of Material Science
Tsukuba and Shimane University.
The National Institute of Material Science Tsukuba is close to Tokyo and is one of the
top-ranked research Universities in Japan to pursue research in
nanotechnology. Shimane University, which is the other center
for international research exchange is located in historic Matsue
City on the Japan sea-coast.
Eligibility:
The program is open to students who have a serious interest in
nanotechnology and prior research experience. Graduate
students will be in any stage of their research program, while most
undergraduate students will have completed their junior year,
although talented students with less experience will also be
considered for acceptance in the program.
The University of North Texas will make necessary travel
arrangements for the trip to Japan. Participants have travel
expenses covered (airfare, lodging, visa, health insurance) and
receive a stipend. To complement the research experience, we
organize enrichment activities, as well as cultural and recreational
field trips. Activities are conducted in English and no prior
knowledge of Japanese is necessary.
Who Can Apply?
Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science
and Electrical Engineering graduate students or majors with senior standing
and at least a 3.0 GPA (on the 4.0 system) may apply. The applicant
must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
How To Apply ?
Complete the
application form on this web site and
mail with a copy of your transcript(s) and two letters of
recommendation by January 30, 2010 to
Dr. Arup Neogi
at the address on the application. Participants in the program
will be notified before February 15, 2010.
